Monchique Freedom Day Celebrations

The central area of Monchique is now dominated by a huge stage which has been erected for the entertainment this weekend.  Musicians will be entertaining the crowds as Portugal celebrates for the 36th year the 25th of April known as Revolution Day, Red Carnation Day,  The Carnation Revolution and Freedom Day which took place in 1974.

When the revolution happened the flower markets were full of red carnations which were placed into the gun barrels of the military soldiers

Many of the towns in Portugal have streets or squares named Rua 25 de Abril and the huge Salazar bridge in Lisbon was also renamed the 25th de Abril Bridge soon after the event.

Visit Monchique this weekend for some great entertainment.
